Digg Hostile Takeover

May 2, 2007 |

The definitive web 2.0 news directory was inundated with users lashing out to Digg’s catering to industry. With the cracking of HD-DVD encryption codes, the movie industry has been stumbling over themselves with cease and desist letters to prevent sites from redistributing the key.

digg takeoverRelated articles were removed from Digg resulting in dozens of seemlingly meaningless posts and enmasse group support of the new articles to ensure the homepage was covered in the content. In fact, each article reproduced that which the movie industry tried to prevent as users resubmitted the key, blog posts about it, photos, videos, or encrypted messages to keep the word out.

Digg’s Kevin Rose was left with the difficult decision of supporting the wishes of the industry or losing the business to disheartened users. In siding with his audience, no doubt the industry will push for the end of Digg leaving us in need of another easy promotion channel.
